CARRARA STADIUM 7 MAY 2005 – WORLD FIRST EVENT FOR DOJO K.O.

The lights dimmed.. and the 1500 strong audience was greeted by the heavy sound of the inspiring DOJO K.O. music rising to a crescendo and joined by the deep chant of DOJO K.O...DOJO K.O. then…

a single spot lit up a block of ice on the DOJO K.O. ring.. a lone figure in a traditional gi knelt on the ring.. the drumbeat rolled and rose in intensity ..and the lone martial artist rose and stood before the blue lit ice.. and suddenly with a masterful back kick.. broke the ice…the crowd roared its approval.. and the show commenced.

The lights dimmed again and the voice over set the tone for the night:
From out of the mists of time come the ancient arts of unarmed combat. The history of martial arts is the history of mankind. From the beginning and down through the millennia, unarmed combat skills meant life or death... Born in ancient times and refined by generations of warriors from all of the diverse cultures of mankind.. the fighting skills of our ancestors have been brought together for you, tonight, by Up Entertainment.. in DOJO K.O. the ultimate reality in the art of combat.

The ring was then bathed in yellow light illuminating a group of martial artists poised in a kata stance. After a controlled and flowing display of kata and a series of demonstrations of freestyle karate, our referee Cameron Quinn broke a series of tiles with hand and foot and finished with an awesome backhand break of a formidable block of ice.

After the gorgeous Surfers Paradise Meter Maids entertained the crowd , the MC (Col Handley) took the ring and introduced the judges , John Donehue, Damien Martin and Daniel Lima.

FIGHT #1

NGAKAU “VOLCANO” SPAIN (Muay Thai, MMA)
Vs
CHRIS “CARVER” SMITH (BJJ)

Ngakau, impressive in his Bruce Lee “Game of Death” outfit strutted to the ring stopping only to ham it up with a Bruce Lee stance. First the feeling out and then Chris shot in for Ngakau’s legs who defended but was brought to the ground. Some ground and pound, and grappling and then back on their feet, An attempt at a guillotine choke by Chris was countered by Ngakau, taking full advantage of the rules, to carry Chris out of the ring.

Fight resumes and Chris quickly shot in and took Ngakau to the ground again followed by some heavy leather on Ngakau from within his guard. Ngakau escapes and regains his feet but ultimately was forced from the ring. On again, Chris scored a take down on Ngakau. After some grappling, Ngakau came close to a ‘Oomplata’ (shoulder submission with the legs) but they both rolled out of the ring.

The bell sounded. Before the referee came in to break them up Ngakau landed a side kick with both feet on Chris’ shoulder shoving him out of the ring. The crowd went berserk and Ngakau was reprimanded. Round 2 side kicks from Ngakau, takedown by Chris, unable to complete. . Chris attempted a shoot, Ngakau defended and reversed and finished with a full mount high on Chris’ chest. Some serious ground and pound by Ngakau forced Chris to give his back and tap out .

FIGHT #2

GLENN ‘THE DISCIPLE” DOTTLER (Chinese MMA)
Vs
DALE “THE WHITE BULL” BUSHELL (Boxing)

Fight starts, cautious blows from both fighters Dale goes in for a right hook, misses and turns and Glen counters with his own right hook moving with the turn and spins Dale to the edge of the ring and out. Dale climbs back in for an 8 count he then charges in with a good kick to the shins of Glenn “The Disciple” and both fighters to trade punches. Dale makes a failed takedown attempt and Glenn responds by pulling the off-balance Dale to the edge of the ring and pushes him out. The fight

resumes and the now frustrated Dale throws some bar room punches.

Glenn dodges and waits and suddenly throws a solid right hook that connects with Dale’s jaw and stuns him. After a standing 8 count the fight resumes. Dale takes the fight to Glenn with more professional punches but clearly shows respect for Glenn’s power and reach. Both fighters exchange inconclusive blows until Glenn finds an opening and delivers the coup de grace, a text book overhand right hook to Dale’s jaw. The ref stops the fight and declares Glenn the winner by a TKO.

AIKIDO DEMONSTRATION

Aikido demonstration by Mori Sensei (6 th Dan) and his students from Yoshinkan Brisbane demonstrated his Kata, proceeded to the Aiki Ken (sword) demonstration and then showcased the defense tactics of an unarmed fighter against an opponent with a bokken (wooden sword) and finished by an empty hand display where the slight Sensei easily disposed of several much heavier students. The crowd enjoyed the traditional martial arts demonstration which displayed the impressive techniques of Aikido.

FIGHT #3

NICK “DIE HARD” TURELLO (Hapkido)
Vs
DARREN “DAMAGE” CAMIDGE (Kempo)

These fighters came to entertain the crowd and entertain they did. Darren “Damage” Camidge showed to be the better fighter and took advantage of an off-balance opponent to win by a throw out. After a fast and furious struggle and Nick’s attempts at a stand up choke on Darren and an attempted knee to the head, Darren showed good strength as he pushed Nick out of the ring for the first throw out.
The fight resumes with a clash of legs as they both attempted kicks until Darren grabbed onto Nick’s waist and shorts and lifted and threw him straight out of the ring again for Nick’s second throw out. Darren teetered near the edge himself but managed to stay in the ring. When the fight resumes Nick
makes some good head shots and Darren gets in some body punches. Nick was able to get in a mighty knee blow to Darren’s head taking him to the canvas with the referee giving him an 8 count. Darren takes the fight to Nick, blocks an attempted front kick from Nick with a low kick of his own and then grabs onto Nick around the upper leg again, this time not able to let go and taking both of them out. Nick goes for another kick but this time Darren cleverly fakes a
spinning round house kick but grabs Nick’s leg at the knee. Nick made a failed attempt at a choke on Darren’s exposed neck with both going to the ground. Nick attempted a shoulder submission as Darren slipped out of the choke and rained some blows to Nick’s head. Back to their feet they struggled and wrestled before going to the ground again. Nick was attempting to dominate
with punches to the head and another attempted choke. Darren’s strength prevailed and he went to push him out again, this time Nick held on tight with arms and legs, both going out together. Darren’s strength prevailed and he went to push him out again, this time Nick held on tight with arms and legs, both going out together. With both now exhausted, Darren keeps to his strategy and uses his strength to simply push Nick out of the ring for a final throw out.

FIGHT #4

COREY “RELIC” EADES (Wing Chun Kung-Fu)
Vs
MATT “THE KID” TEMPEST (Freestyle boxing)

Corey came out fighting with some good punches and a front kick to Matt who counters with a left-right combo to the side of Corey’s head. Matt attempts a takedown. Corey misses a leg sweep. Matt scored a slick takedown on Corey but was unable to finish when the ref called break. Both competitors looking

tired early but showed plenty of aggression. Corey got in some quick left punches to Matt’s face. Matt went for the takedown with both going to the ground awkwardly. Corey regained his feet with Matt riding on his shoulders who rolled over his shoulders and landed on his feet near the edge of the ring. Corey seized the opportunity and pushed Matt out for the first throw out.

 
The action resumed with Matt landing solid punches until the ref called an 8 count just before the bell sounded for the end of Round 1. Round 2 began with both fighters digging in and standing toe to toe, duking it out with all of the energy they could muster. Corey got the better of the exchange and threw Matt out of the ring for the second time. Matt having no puff left in him to continue, failed to make it back into the ring before the 10 count was up. Corey wins by Technical Knock Out.

FIGHT #5

CARL “ TOMBSTONE” TOOMEY (MMA)
Vs
PRISCUS “THE WOG BOY” FOGAGNOLO (Judo)

This fight had an explosive start with Priscus going straight for a throwout When they resumed Carl threw a powerful leg kick but Priscus avoided and jabbed Carl in the face to set up for a takedown. Carl managed to pull Priscus into his guard but Priscus managed to get back to his feet and carried Carl over the perimeter again. Back to their feet in the centre they both exchanged blows for a while before both going out. The fight resumed with Carl throwing a

beautiful kick to Priscus’ lead leg, Priscus ignored the kick and quickly closed the distance and secured a double leg takedown. He landed in side control, then switched to north-south. Carl managed to get up to his knees with Priscus still holding on and they both went over the edge. Priscus received a cut for the trouble, and after the cut was treated, they got back to action. Carl connected with another strong kick to the legs as Priscus attempted to close
again Carl got in a knee kick before they both went to the ground where Priscus secured side control and started punching Carl who was on the edge of the ring. Trying not to go out again, he held on to Priscus and took him out with him. Starting back in the middle they exchanged blows briefly, entered the clinch then Priscus lifted Carl and falling backwards executed a text book Ura Nage judo back throw which sent Carl Toomey right over his head and out of the ring for the third time.

FIGHT #6

ANGUS “DARWIT” UBERGANG (Hapkido)
Vs
ALFIO “QUASAR” DIMAIO (Wing Chun Kung Fu)

The start was intense, Alfio fired off a some rapid leg kicks. The first contact ended when Angus backstepped out of the ring. They resumed the fight by getting in close straight away, Angus threw Alfio to the ground and secured a full-mounted position, throwing punches at Alfio’s head, Alfio managed to tie Angus’ hands up in his own T-shirt. The T shirt was removed and the fight resumed. They exchanged briefly then Angus
attempted to throw a spinning kick which got him caught with his back to his opponent and off balance allowing Alfio to push him out of the ring without too much effort. Back on with the fight, Alfio presses an attack which puts Angus on the back pedal, he attempts a spinning jump kick to Alfio’s mid section but is over-balanced and outside the ring again. They resumed the fight by throwing wild leather at each other, Alfio gradually got the upperhand and the
referee gave Angus a standing 8 count and determined that Angus was unable to continue. Alfio wins by a knockout.

FIGHT #7

IAN “THE TEACHER” ROOK (Chinese MMA)
Vs
ALFIO “QUASAR” DIMAIO (Wing Chun Kung Fu)

The fight started with both fighters tentatively feeling each other out. Andrew started throwing some really heavy kicks which Ian defended really well, then countered with a combination and charge of his own. They grappled on their feet for a while, until Andrew used the momentum to sling Ian out of the ring. Back in the middle of the ring Andrew starts firing off some really mean kicks to Ian’s legs, Ian started to buckle and the Wolverine closed in. The referee stopped Andrew’s
advance to give Ian a standing 8 count. Once the action resumed, Andrew wasted no time in closing the distance and letting fly with some thundering punches which knocked Ian out while still on his feet. Ian slowly fell to the canvas on his head and immediately the medical officers were there to assist. It’s not very often that you will witness a knockout of this caliber. Andrew, the man with thunder in his hands, defeats Ian “The Teacher” Rook by K.O.

FIGHT #8

BIG JIM (MMA)
Vs
DARREN “THE BARBARIAN” BERTONI (Muay Thai)

Darren took it straight to Big Jim with a couple of jabs and crosses which only just missed their mark. Big Jim closed the gap, tied Darren up and tripped Darren for the takedown. Big Jim managed to get side control and proceeded to punch Darren in the face from on top forcing a submission from Darren Bertoni.

What a great night of entertainment! 16 fighters, 8 fights ending in throw outs, submissions and knockouts. Each warrior able to showcase his style with full expression in a format that hasn’t been seen before. We didn’t know what to expect and we were certainly treated to a night of great fights and great entertainment.
